“I want to support that line of work that has led you here but without forgetting that constant search that allows you to evolve”
Years of experience, his background of knowledge and a more than recognized trajectory with Sara Errani and the Lozano-Altur Tennis Academy, have brought a new and great step for coach Pablo Lozano, who is now part of the team of a Top player like Roberto Bautista Agut, with whom he already works since the ATP 500 in Rotterdam.
The Valencian coach and the Castellón native have known each other for several years and have even worked together repeatedly since the end of last season, so this partnership was a natural step in their careers. Lozano will be the second in command in a staff led by Pepe Vendrell, who will continue to lead the team.
“Rober is a player with a lot of potential, his ranking says it. He is also a charming guy on a personal level, I have known him for many years, since his time in the Futures, I have always had a lot of esteem for him”, said Pablo Lozano in an interview with Eurosport, where in addition to highlighting his new player, he also elevated his teammate. “And with Pepe the same, we are the same age, I still remember playing together in a tournament in the Valencian Community, he is a good friend of mine. The most important thing is that I identify a lot with the line in which they have been working all these years, I like how they have done things. I really want to contribute to this project so that we can continue to grow”, he added.
Bautista Agut is coming off a brilliant season, one where he reached the Top 10, a rhythm he maintains at the beginning of 2020 in which he was present for Spain in the ATP Cup and where he reached the third round of the Australian Open. However, Roberto aims even higher, new goals are looming on his horizon and by his side he wants to have a coach who can contribute a lot.
“In these years he has been evolving as a player, improving in all facets of the game, he has managed to perform at a very high tennis level for many days. Above all, he has managed to manage that level of play very well with other external factors, such as the ability to suffer or reading tennis, all of which has given him great regularity. I know that 2020 will not be easy, every year has an extreme difficulty no matter how well you have done in the past. Maintaining the level will be complex but he can do it, that’s where we come in to help him live with new situations that will not be easy”, explains one of the directors of our Academy.
Vendrell has no doubts about the quality of the Valencian and knows that his contribution will be key in a campaign in which his pupil has great objectives. “It is a luxury to have Pablo with us, he has a way of working and understanding tennis very similar to ours”, he acknowledges. “His way of working, understanding tennis and even seeing life is very similar to ours, so he can contribute a lot to us. Hopefully it helps us push ourselves to stay up there. He has a lot of experience in high performance, his work and career with Sara has always been an example, from minute one it has been very easy to understand each other and what we hope is to be able to enjoy and learn together. I have total admiration for his career with Sara, they have always been an inspiration for the rest”, explained the technician who has worked with Bautista Agut since 2015.
Pablo Lozano is very clear about how he can promote the growth of a tennis player who has not only reached the elite of the best tennis in the world, but has also become the leader of Spain and a constant player within the first places of the classification of professional tennis players.
“The season is set with a certain calm and a certain demand, setting high goals but knowing at the same time that the difficulty is great. Rober wants to improve, he wants to continue being up. In my case, I will try to bring that experience that I already lived with Sara in her day, I know that they are different circuits, but there are quite similar situations, it does not matter if you are a man or a woman”, Lozano details. “At an emotional management level, I can anticipate some things that I experienced with Sara and that may be new to you. In tennis, Rober already has some very good skills, I would love for him not to lose his essence. I want to support that line of work that has taken him here, but without forgetting that constant search that allows him to evolve”.
Their journey together has already started in the ATP 500 in Rotterdam and will continue in the Dubai tournament and in the first Masters 1000 of the season, Indian Wells, where Pablo Lozano will lead Roberto Bautista Agut’s work team.
