Touching a racket or watching tennis at some point can change a person’s destiny, a spark that unleashes many possibilities for a human being, who can shape their future with a racket in hand.
Regardless of the place that this meeting occupies in the universe, the first thought that comes is to be a professional player and live with an inexhaustible passion, but there are few great fortunate and enormous fighters, those who come to materialize what was always in their imagination. But fortunately there are other ways to find happiness and a livelihood with tennis as a way of life, with method.
Through discipline, success can be achieved and we find many examples, the first of which is training to be a coach, physical trainers specialized in white sports, nutritionists, journalists, and in recent years, there are also many players who has been able to study to train as professionals in different areas with tennis as a platform.
These enormous opportunities have allowed many young people to continue playing at a high level and, at the same time, study at the best universities in the United States, as in the case of our former student, Joan Carles Alcalá, who has shared his experience in obtaining a scholarship that allowed him to obtain important academic degrees.
“Studying and playing tennis in the United States gave me many advantages on a personal, academic and sports level,” confesses Carles Alcalá. “My university (Georgia Southern) gave me a scholarship that covered practically everything in terms of academics, sports, health (including my hip operation) for four and a half years. I am very grateful because it changed my life for the better. On a personal level, it made me wake up a lot and learn English, something necessary in the world we live today”, he adds.
Like many, or like almost everyone, Joan always worked to become a professional, but tennis is a very tough profession and reaching this goal is difficult. “Getting my studies done, while playing and training at a high level, was one of the main reasons why I came. Thanks to that, now that I can no longer play tennis due to my hip surgery, but I have my career and I am working as a physical trainer for four teams at my university, at the same time that I get the Master in high sports performance”, highlighted Joan Carles Alcala.
